Beyond Behaviors Using Brain Science and Compassion to Understand and Solve Children Behavioral Challenges Mona Delahooke Books Reviews

  • Are you are a parent, teacher, or mental health professional working with kids who have persistent difficulties at home or school? Do you know and love a child with trauma and anxiety, who is neurodiverse or autistic, or who has received any diagnosis traditionally related to challenging behaviors (RAD, ODD, DMDD, PTSD, DTD, IED, ADHD, etc.)?

If so, GO BUY THIS BOOK NOW... then give an extra copy to every professional working with the child!

Dr. Mona Delahooke has put into words so clearly and brilliantly what many of us have known for years about the most challenging kids in our homes and classrooms. In a compelling, compassionate, and easy-to-read format, she has addressed many of the false assumptions underlying out-dated behavior management systems and proposes a refreshingly compassionate and brain-based approach.

Instead of following the traditional path of using rewards and consequences as a way to motivate children to behave, she focuses on the importance of building an environment of safety, respecting individual diversity, and understanding children’s sensory and nervous systems. With plenty of scholarly research, along with specific examples and helpful diagrams, her book clearly and beautifully demonstrates the importance of figuring out what is driving the behavior as the key to finding compassionate solutions that work!
  • This new book by Dr. Delahooke offers hope and guidance for parents and children struggling with challenging behaviors and the management of these behaviors. Often, parents feel pressed to force change in behavior without remembering that a given situation can be used as an opportunity to understand their child and to make important emotional contact. This book is important because it addresses both sides of the relationship equation (parent and child) and offers tools to help meet and understand the complex, and at times overwhelming, emotional needs/behaviors of children.
I have already found the ideas in this book essential in guiding patients my clinical practice; helping them navigate complex emotional states that are an outcome of normal human relating.
  • Child Psychologist Dr. Mona Delahooke’s new book, “Beyond Behaviors”, is a must read for anyone who works with and/or has children in their lives! Every child acts out at some point (kicking, screaming, yelling, resisting), and this book is filled with helpful suggestions and case studies based on the author’s extensive experience working with children. Readers will learn how to handle challenging behaviors with care versus punishment. Dr. Delahooke uses really helpful graphics to illustrate her concept that disruptive behaviors are just the “tip of the iceberg” and we need to look at what is happening below the surface with compassion. Because I love someone with autism, Chapter 7 Behaviors in Autism and Neurodiversity Handle with Care connected with me most. If you’re a parent, teacher, professional, aunt, uncle or caregiver for a child, “Beyond Behaviors” is your go-to guide for how to better understand a child’s challenging behaviors, create a safe place for them, and help them build lasting relationships.
  • I have only read the first 14 pages and I have already gained valuable knowledge. I am going to assign my supervisees to read this book. I am passionate about trauma and how it impacts the brain. When looking at the iceberg to uncover the driving force of behaivors, it is for the most part the biggest issue. This book has validated my thinking on how I have started treating and assessing my clients.
  • I am a licensed clinical social worker and a mom. I have seen for myself, over 18 years, that reward/punishment/level/privilege systems for “shaping” behavior simply DO NOT WORK to help our most challenging kids. In fact, if you don’t understand where behavior comes from, you cannot help that child. So often, kids with trauma, chronic stress, and neurological differences who behave in non-compliant ways are presumed to be manipulative, willfully defiant, and in need of more discipline. What’s missing in these children’s lives is NOT “accountability” or “consequences”— most of these kids have been punished more harshly and consistently than you can imagine— it’s human connection! Warm, attuned, positive relationships with adults who accept them the way they are.

Does that sound too touchy-feely to you? Dr Delahooke has compelling neuroscientific evidence to back this up. Behaviorally challenged kids generally have an overactive fight-or-flight response to daily stressors, which keeps their brains from developing on par with their peers. They aren’t unmotivated or unwilling to behave better; they simply can’t. What will help? Providing an environment that supports the child in coping with stress and attaining a state of calm security. No one can learn or acquire new skills (academic, social, and self-regulatory skills) when they are in a constant state of fatigue, anxiety, and stress. Dr Delahooke lays out a compelling, readable, engaging blueprint for truly helping our most vulnerable kids.
  • I constantly wear two hats in regards to children’s mental health. I am a counselor who works primarily with children and a mom of two wonderful (and anxious) kiddos. This book has made it onto my short list of favorite books for understanding child behavior. Thank you Mona Delahooke for pulling together information about children’s development and sensory systems while underpinning it with Stephen Porges’ information on the Polyvagal Theory. Reading the book has provided me with many “ah ha” moments. I have recommended the book to colleagues, family and all of my son’s teachers who are willing to listen! The book is easy to read and the worksheets are incredibly helpful. Thank you!!!!
