Burnout The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle Emily Nagoski PhD Amelia Nagoski DMA 9781984817068 Books Reviews

  • This book is special and important. It's the kind of book you want to give to everyone you know because you know it will make their lives a better place. From understanding the importance of completing the stress cycle, to facing down "Human Giver Syndrome" to making friends with the madwoman we all have in our attic, the Nagoski sisters break down some serious research and make it easy to understand and apply. Please do yourself a favor and read this book immediately.
  • I loved the pop culture references, which added a depth and commonality of them. Pop culture is a product of its times, and our times are, as the euphemism goes, "interesting." The use of pop culture to help figure out our responses is a brilliant short cut. BURNOUT taught me so many helpful things, vivid metaphors that should stick in my mind for when the stress is high and my mind is casting about for a place to ground itself. Although many Star Trek references abound, so do others. So very Darmok and Jalad at Tenagra.
  • I learned a lot about myself and my stress, and finally an understandable way to manage it. This book is realistic and relatable and I know I'll read it multiple times.
  • The themes described in this book are issues that frequently come up in my work as a therapist. I was blown away at the ease in which the authors explained difficult concepts regarding stress cycles, body image issues, the patriarchy, self-compassion and many others that took me years of graduate school to understand. I love their perspective regarding "Human Giver Syndrome" and other issues pertaining to women. This book was fun, easy to read, and is an absolute "must-have" in my collection. I have recommended it to numerous clients.
  • This is an incredible groundbreaking book, for everyone (if the non-women can get past it being written for women). The first two chapters alone are worth the price of the book, just for all the information on how stress and stressors work in our bodies and how to help our bodies heal. Highly recommended.
  • I loved Emily's first book "Come As You Are" and knew that this one would be a home run as well. She and her sister do a fantastic job of making you feel seen while also giving practical solutions. I recommend this to everyone and plan on randomly leaving it in coffee shops so that someone can happen upon it.
  • Excellent, intersectional lens and approach to self-help with relatable anecdotes and science-based tips to improve your life. I love this book and it has improved my life already.
  • Would highly recommend this to anyone who identifies as female, or knows and cares about someone who identifies as female.
